Speakers Bureau

GLSEN - The Gay, Lesbian,Straight Education Network is the only national organization that brings together a wide variety of people who actively care about ending homophobia in the schools. Everyone (regardless of occupation or sexual orientation) is welcome to get involved with GLSEN. The Chicago chapter, which became active during the 1994-1995 school year, is extremely interested in working with like-minded individuals and groups throughout the Midwest--especially youth support groups, PFLAG chapters, union caucuses, gay-straight student alliances, and educator's groups. In addition to sponsoring meetings, workshops, conferences, an annual Back-to-School campaign and a contingent in the Chicago Pride Parade each June, GLSEN Chicago presents cash two scholarships each year to young people (regardless of their sexual orientation) who have demonstrated a commitment to ending homophobia in the Illinois schools.

Our Meetings

On the last Tuesday of each month, GLSEN Chicago sponsors programs that are free and open to the public. You don't have to be a GLSEN member or even an educator to attend. Meetings have included panels of educators speaking out on their experiences (such as coming out in the classroom) and informational presentations (such as how local unions deal with lesbian/gay issues, how schools can celebrate October as Lesbian/Gay History Month, etc.). These monthly meetings take place from 7-9 PM at the Conrad Sulzer Library, 4455 N. Lincoln Avenue (at Montrose) in Chicago.

There is a sign language interpreter at every meeting so Deaf and Hard of Hearing participants are always welcome.

After meetings, everyone is invited to relax at a "social hour," usually held at a nearby restaurant or bar.
